Wood Fired Sauna
The Pleasures of Owning a Wood Fired Sauna
Imagine the pleasure of owning a wood fired sauna. The
scent of cedar and the crackling sounds and sights of the wood fire greet
you as you enter to be met by a blast of hot air. The
sauna room heater is
running full bore and after just a few minutes you start sweating profusely.
You get a ladle of water from the bucket and throw it over the heated rocks
on top of the wood burning stove. The steam makes you gasp for fresh air and
you head outside to cool off in the nearby lake. Strangely enough the cold
water doesn’t feel cold at all. After relaxing for a while you stoke the
fire and repeat the procedure.
Such are the pleasures of wood fired home
saunas. Just ask any Finn. The Finns can’t do without them. That’s why
there are over 1.6 million in use for a population of only 5 million.
200,000 of Finland’s saunas are built on the shores of lakes and rivers,
traditionally heated by wood fired stoves. There are other methods of
heating a sauna room, but nothing compares to an authentic wood fired
heater.
An indoor or outdoor family
sauna heated by a wood burning stove makes a great addition to your home
or a cottage on the lake, especially if you have a good supply of fire wood
on hand. When planning the size of the sauna room or cabin, determine
whether or not you will be using it for socializing with friends and other
family members. A good size for a family sauna is 6’ x 6’. Plan on adding a
small dressing room attached to the sauna. The dressing room can also be
used to store the fire wood supply and is ideal for the installation of a
shower if you don’t have a convenient lake nearby.
Precut kits and pre-built modular
saunas make construction of a sauna room an easy project for
do-it-yourselfers. There is a choice of heaters that includes wood fired
stoves, electric, gas and infrared heaters appropriately sized to fit any
rooms.
