Sauna Accessories for your Home Sauna

Sauna accessories make your home sauna not only more enjoyable but some of these accessory items are necessary for the proper operation of an authentic Finnish sweat room, whether it is heated by a traditional wood-burning sauna room heater or an electric stove. For example, the Finnish sauna is always equipped with a bucket and ladle to produce steam, a process the Finns call löyly.

Other essential home sauna equipment include the thermometer and hygrometer, hour glass timer, towel racks and accessories such as wooden headrests, floorboards and wall lights. You can also use your sauna heater to disperse aromatherapy essential oils from a tray that’s suspended above the heater. You can let eucalyptus oils drip on top of the stove to open the sinuses and make breathing in the hot air easier.

A good quality thermometer is an accessory you just cannot do without. Equipping your home sauna with an old-fashioned capillary style thermometer with a temperature range up to 250 degrees F is best. Look for a thermometer that is crack and warp resistant and withstands the heat and moisture.

Accessorizing home saunas with equipment such as a hygrometer makes a lot of sense. The hygrometer measures the relative humidity level inside the sauna and is essential in maintaining the desired moisture content of the air. Saunas can have a humidity level of anywhere from 5% to 40% and keeping track of the moisture will make a big difference in how you perceive and tolerate the heat.

Equipping your home sauna with a supply of aromatherapy accessories adds a pleasant and calming scent to the air. Add some of these essential oils to a water bucket. Then use the ladle to pour the scented water over the rocks on top of the heater. You can also use dry, aromatic leaves and spread them on top of the stove to release the fragrance.
