How to Build a Family Sauna
Anyone who has read up on
how to build a family sauna
knows there are some skills to be learned to build one from scratch. On the
other hand, precut sauna kits
that come with detailed assembly instruction make the project a lot easier.
All you need is a waterproof, level surface and an area of 25 – 45 sq. ft.
somewhere in your house. Alternatively, you can pour a concrete slab and
build a frame to install the sauna kit outdoors.
Whether you build an indoor
or outdoor family sauna, you have to know how to build a frame if there
is no existing room available. 2” x 4” studs and R12 insulation should be
used for building the walls and ceiling. Most indoor saunas are heated by
electric stoves requiring a split 15 A breaker. Larger heaters may need a 30
A or 40 A breaker and appropriately sized wires of the correct gauge. This
is best done by an electrician before installing the precut kit.
Once the frame is built, insulated and the wiring in place, the room is
ready for the installation of the sauna kit. The plans that come with these
precut kits will show you exactly how to build from start to finish. Plan to
spend 2 to 3 days on a typical family sauna. You will need some basic skills
and know how to build using tools such as a hammer, handsaw, miter box,
electric drill, tape measure and a square to get the job done.
A home handyman who knows how to build with these precut kits can save a lot
of money compared to a prefabricated or pre-built modular sauna kit. Modular
saunas are more expensive since most of the work is already done for you. If
you choose building your family sauna with a precut or custom designed kit,
you can choose the type of wood (cedar, aspen or poplar), type of heater
(wood-burning, electric, gas or infrared) and all the accessories for a
sauna that is uniquely yours.
