Designing Commercial Saunas – Some Guidelines to
Follow
Commercial saunas are subjected to almost continuous
use and require careful planning with regards to location, flooring, wall
construction, choice of heaters, ease of maintenance and so on. It’s a good
idea to compare commercially built saunas from several manufacturers before
deciding on a particular sauna for installation in a public pool, spa, hotel
or resort.
A commercial sauna comparison will tell you if a commercially built product
is available as a kit or as a
pre-built modular sauna. For example, the wall panels for most
residential saunas are made from industry-standard western red cedar, an
aromatic wood that causes allergic reactions in some people. In comparison,
wall paneling in public saunas is made from hemlock which has no aroma or
resins to cause allergies.
Commercial sauna room heaters are
larger compared to residential heaters and should be made from stainless
steel to prevent corrosion. The elements must be designed to withstand
continuous use on a daily basis. Look for double or triple outer wall
construction for a cool outside surface to prevent accidental burns to sauna
patrons. Shop around by comparing heater features such as airflow, heat
retention and humidity control to find a suitable heater for commercial
applications.
An important consideration in commercially built saunas is the construction
of the walls and ceiling. Steel studs and R13 to R19 insulation for the
walls and R38 for the ceiling are recommended. Compare design plans and
municipal regulations regarding the construction of commercially built
saunas. Ask your commercial sauna supplier to see if a floor drain,
sprinkler system and ventilation system is required for your particular
situation.
Compare some of the prefabricated
home saunas, infrared saunas and
heaters from the manufacturers listed in our
sauna buying guide. Some of these
precut and modular kits and heaters are suitable for semi-commercial
applications such as condos and apartments.
