Build-It-Yourself Home Sauna Kit Assembles in 2 Hours

A build-it-yourself home sauna kit is a fairly easy project that can be completed in a weekend by the average-skilled home handyman. These prefabricated home saunas (sometimes called pre-built modular saunas) use panels or tongue-and-groove boards and can be assembled in as little as 2 hours. The panels in these sauna room kits are all numbered and the kit contains detailed building instructions that are easy to understand.

For starters, you need a waterproof surface such as tiles, linoleum or a concrete floor on which to build the sauna room. Most build-it-yourself kits are also suitable for building outdoor home saunas with the addition of a roof. Again, a flat, waterproof surface is needed. Most kits can be assembled by following these four simple steps:

  • 1. Lay out the base boards on the floor and make sure everything is level and square. Take the first two panels from the build-it-yourself kit and form a corner by mounting the panels on the base boards.

  • 2. Continue adding panels until the sauna room is enclosed on three sides. Install the pre-assembled benches.

  • 3. Complete the walls of the home sauna by sliding in the panels for the last remaining wall, followed by the ceiling panels.

  • 4. The last building step involves attaching the door frame and the pre-hung door that you ordered with the kit. You can install the sauna room heater, thermostat and light fixtures yourself but the final hook-up should be done by a licensed electrician.

Build-it-yourself kits are available for saunas measuring 4’ x 5’ to 7’ x 7’. There is a choice of wood such as poplar, aspen, cedar and fir to complement any room or décor. Options include your choice of sauna stove and controls, type of door, door hinge location and whether or not you would like to add a window to the home sauna.
