What’s so Special About an Authentic Finnish Sauna?

What makes a sauna an authentic Finnish Sauna? While there are no concrete set of rules dictating what qualifies a sauna as Finnish, there are some common denominators. A Finnish Sauna is usually constructed in a location separate from the main home and is typically housed near a body of water such as a lake or stream. Additionally, the sauna heater is usually a wood burning stove topped with good sized stones which will preserve the heat. Finally, Finnish sauna construction includes two levels of benches designed to seat anywhere from two to six people comfortably.

But besides the location and type of construction, what truly makes a sauna an authentic Finnish style sauna is how people use it. The Finns are typically naked during the entire sweating ritual. Their sweating session begins by first enjoying the dry heat of the sauna. Then, the bathers throw water on the hot stones to quickly increase the humidity level. The Finnish sauna experience allows bathers to relax and unwind with the goal of sweating heavily to detoxify the body. Afterwards, some die-hard bathers will have a cooling dip in the nearby lake or stream.

For over two thousand years, the people of Finland have incorporated the use of saunas into their daily lives. Finland boasts over 1.6 million saunas for a population of only 5.2 million people. Even many apartments in Finland have been constructed with private saunas located in each unit. It is not just a form of recreation, but an authentic way of life.

Finns believe that the pure and natural experience of an authentically constructed Finnish sauna can not only bathe, but cleanse and relax tired muscles, while revitalizing and conditioning the body, mind, and spirit. Finns and sauna users around the world will attest to the health benefits of using a sauna on a regular basis. So, is there any wonder why sauna users love their saunas so much?
