Sauna Heaters
Options in Sauna Heaters – Should I use an Electric or
a Wood Burning Stove?
Sauna heaters
are available as wood burning, electric, infrared, gas and propane stoves. If
you want to build a traditional Finnish outdoor sauna and you want to enjoy
the sound, scent and smell that comes with burning wood, then by all means
build a wood-fired sauna. Manufacturers of modern home
saunas recommend an electric stove for inside installations as the best
choice when it comes to convenience and safety.
Whether you choose an electric vs. wood burning heater also depends on the
availability of electricity at your sauna’s location or the availability of
a reliable source of fire wood. Another consideration is the cost of
electricity vs. the cost of obtaining the supply. Expect to pay between $60
and $85 a cord depending on the type of wood and the supply and demand,
whether it is cut and split, picked up by yourself or delivered to your
home.
Other considerations when it comes to choosing electrically heated stoves
vs. stoves that burn wood are the emissions. Some municipalities may have
restrictions in place or have banned these types of dirty stoves from new
construction. If this is the case or you prefer an environmentally clean
source of energy, an electric stove is the best choice for your home sauna,
followed by natural gas.
Modern sauna room heaters designed to
burn wood instead of using electricity have an excellent efficiency ratio
which will heat your sauna faster than a regular stove. Stoves such as the Polar Sauna Wilderness Stove
include a tray that can hold over 100 lbs of stones so you can create soft
steam by throwing water over the rocks. Some electric stoves also have this
capability.
