Finnish Home Saunas - Enjoy Heat And Steam Therapy At Home

Home saunas and steam baths have been popular in Scandinavian countries for more than a thousand years. Finns are known to take a sauna at least once a week - they know that sweating cleanses the body of impurities, improves circulation and provides renewed energy. Building your own sauna room at home is an easy project with prefabricated sauna kits available from a number of manufacturers. Most homes have a spare area somewhere in the bathroom, bedroom or basement suitable for the installation of one of these easy-to-assemble custom or modular kits. A 4' x 4' area is all that is needed for a one-person sauna room.

The Finnish Home Sauna
Finnish Home Saunas
A typical Finnish sauna uses a wood-burning heater and operates at a temperature of about 180 degrees F. Heated rocks on top of the stove are periodically splashed with water to produce wafts of steam and to make it easier to breathe. The humidity level of these saunas is in the range of 10-30%, even with the added humidity that comes from the vaporized water. Most prefabricated kits for modern homes come with an electric heater and the interior is made from fragrant cedar, redwood, pine or poplar wood.

The Steam Bath

The humidity in a Finnish sauna is regulated by how much water is ladled on top of the rocks. A home sauna can be operated either dry or as a steam room by increasing the humidity. Look for prefabricated kits that include a heater with a large rock capacity for heat storage and steam production. Another option is to go with a steam generator kit that can be installed in an enclosure similar to an ordinary shower stall. A steam-only room or "Turkish bath" is usually lined with tile due to the constant moisture and humidity.

How To Take A Sauna

An authentic Finnish sauna bath starts by pre-heating the room until the desired temperature (175-195 degrees F) and hot, dry air is present. Then plan on spending a couple of hours for two or three relaxing sweating sessions.

  • Take a shower and dry yourself before entering
  • Sit on a bench where the hot air is still comfortable. It's hottest on top. (Most prefabricated kits come with several pre-assembled benches at different heights)
  • Douse the hot rocks on top of the heater periodically with water from the bucket to fill the room with wafts of steam.
  • Die-hard home sauna bathers use birch twigs and beat themselves to stimulate circulation.
  • After 10 - 15 minutes of sweating, cool off by taking another shower. Relax for half an hour and repeat.

Have a look at the modular and precut sauna kit packages available for building your own home sauna or steam bath. Most saunas in Finland are built on a lake and some Finnish manufacturers prefabricate outdoor sauna kits from logs. In North America, the majority of saunas are built indoors and these prefabricated kits using wooden panels make construction of a Finnish sauna an easy project for the do-it-yourself home renovator.
